Made my first trip up to the Abbey Pub last night for this show. It is certainly way up there, but it was a cool little venue. There is a balcony and a pretty alright floor area. Anyway, the house certainly got really fucking rocking and intense for this one, as I’m sure a lot of Cut Copy shows get to be, and it was pretty solid.
Anyway, the initial opener was Mobius Band, and they were actually really, really good. They had some really catchy songs, and some great 80s style hooks in their songs that were pretty awesome. This song “Friends Like These” had pretty much everyone in the house bobbing up and down, it was great. Don’t really know much about these guys but I would say they are definitely worth checking out, and I would certainly expect to hear more from them in the future.
Next up was the Black Kids. They were the huge buzz band of the year last year, and rode that buzz into a record label bidding frenzy, and ended up with Columbia. They still do not have an official album out, and have been touring for about the last year on their free EP “Wizard of Ahhs”. The songs are really catchy and really great, but I have always heard bad things about their live show, citing usually their stage presence. I have to say I can certainly see where the criticism is coming from, but I think it is really due to being such a young band. They clearly don’t have the seasoned band interplay of more experienced bands, but I think they will work that out in time. There were moments in the show where they really nailed it (”Hurricane Jane”, “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend…”) and some where they kind of fell a little flat. While they didn’t really blow away with their live show, they are just a little green I think and will pick it up in time. The songs are so quality that the rest will come. I think it’s a case of that their buzz and popularity is really based on their songs, and wasn’t the kind of thing where the buzz was solely based on their great live show. I think as they play more and get around more it will be good.
After Black Kids, Cut Copy came out, and the crowd was mega-pumped about the show when these guys jumped on. And pretty much from the word ‘go’ everyone was jumping, the floor was shaking, and it was just dance party all over your face. They tore through a lot of songs off of their new album, with the real highlight being “Lights & Music”, which had the whole room just exploding pretty much. It was a real love fest between the audience and the band the whole show, and they seemed to be eating it up, and the crowd just went crazy with every dance breakdown of every song. They were really in fine form, and were great live. A lot of times with electronic/synth-y kinds of bands you aren’t sure what to expect live, but these guys were fantastic and exceeded my expectations. Their songs really came to life, and the fact that the audience was going ape shit the whole time didn’t hurt either. I highly recommend checking these guys out if you get a chance, but be prepared to dance or get the fuck out of the way. And being able to see up and comers Black Kids is a huge plus as well.

Did you go to the early show or the late show?
I went to the late show, I had so much fun.
I thought I was the only person who knew about Cut Copy (I saw them open for Franz Ferdinand like 3 years ago). But I guess all the buzz about the new album has paid off.
