Mix Tape Monday: Pitchfork Music Fest Preview

Posted July 7th, 2008 by BVaz · 1 Comment

With the greatness of the Pitchfork Music Fest coming up next weekend, I thought I would throw some fuel on the hype fire for it with some of the bands that will be blowing our minds come time for the festival. I already covered some more Dinosaur Jr. last Thursday so let’s hit up some of the other acts.

Fleet Foxes of course I saw back at Schuba’s opening for Blitzen Trapper in April and I was pretty impressed with them. They were really solid, and have since released a new album that didn’t quite blow me away, but was quite good, and they will be playing the Pitchfork showcase at Pritzker Pavilion for FREE on next Thursday night I believe. Even if you don’t hit up the fest, you should really check out the free show as it should be quite good. They play the fest on Saturday.

Bon Iver has put out one of my favorite albums so far this year, and brings a great brand of soft-spoken folk with enough of a unique edge to make it really interesting to listen to. You should really pick up this album if you haven’t already. I saw them at the Lakeshore Theater for an intimate show back in April that was really, really good. I have to admit I am curious about how the folk sound will translate to a festival kind of setting, but I think the songs are so solid and these guys seem so humble/grateful to be playing that I imagine it should be good. They play on Sunday.

Cut Copy will be bringing the dance action to the fest on Sunday. I really enjoyed their album “In Ghost Colours” and was even more impressed when I saw them playing at the Abbey Pub shortly thereafter, where pretty much everyone in the crowd was just going nuts, and the floor was shaking. Hopefully at the fest they will be able to get even a tenth of that energy from the crowd, and just turn it all into a giant dance party.

Spoon of course will be playing Sunday night of the fest, and pretty much everyone knows and loves Spoon by this point. They have a great sound, and their latest album “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga” is really incredible. I missed their show when they were here at the Vic a few months back, but saw them at both Lolla and ACL last year, and thought their set at ACL was really, really quality. They are certainly one of the premier indie rock bands out there nowadays, and always worth seeing.

And of course there are many others playing that are really good, these are just a few we have covered before here on DBF. For myself the one I am looking forward to the most (aside from my boy J. Mascis and Dinosaur of course) is the Les Savy Fav set on Sunday. After seeing the pure insanity of their set at Coachella I am looking forward to this one.

Go here for more info on the festival. I’m pretty sure everything is sold out except for day passes, but day passes are only around $30 I think, and certainly on both Saturday and Sunday there are a lot of good bands playing each day, so make it happen if you can.

Fleet Foxes - Tiger Mountain Peasant Song - From Fleet Foxes
Bon Iver - Re: Stacks - From For Emma, Forever Ago
Cut Copy - Hearts On Fire - From In Ghost Colours
Spoon - Don’t You Evah - From Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
