Cut Copy – Granada Theater – 9/30/08

Ah, Cut Copy, whenever I’m in the mood for just a great get the crowd bumping kind of show, you are always there to deliver for us. Hit up Granada last night for some 80s infused jams from these Aussies, and once again they brought both noise and funk to the fine people of Dallas.

I caught Cut Copy earlier this year back in Chicago and thought they were absolutely great, unfortunately missed them at Pitchfork Fest (where I heard they absoluetly killed), but I certainly thought that they really got the crowd going at the Abbey, and my one concern going into last night was that perhaps the crowd would be a little listless, as I have noticed Dallas crowds to sometimes be (see Wolf Parade). Well my fear was totally unfounded and the crowd brought their ‘A’ game last night.

The Presets kicked it off and got the party started in appropriate fashion, with basically one guy on the beats and synths and a drummer, also bringing 80s infused jams. They put on a really great set and brought an incredible energy to the stage, and I was really impressed with them.

After they rocked the house, Cut Copy came on. The set started out a little subdued actually, with the volume starting out I think a little lower than the Presets set, but as the set went on, the volume, and consequently the level of party and melted face, grew by leaps and bounds. They mainly hit songs on the new record “In Ghost Colours”, with some older jams sprinkled in there. As they went along the crowd started to give in to their whims a little more and start moving and bouncing more and more.

It kind of slowly built with each song getting progressively more intense and awesome until they knocked it out of the park on “Lights & Music”, which is one of those great live songs for this band. This song and “Hearts on Fire” are the two songs of theirs that, both here and in Chicago, the crowd just goes ape-nuts on, and it is really quite awesome. They hit “Hearts on Fire” as the encore obviously, and sent everyone home dancing.

I was really impressed once again by these guys, and I’m not sure that there is any other band out there that has quite the same live energy in the kind of 80s/dance rock revival category as these guys do. Certainly having the crowd going nuts helps, but I think these guys are real pros at whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Regardless, these guys are right up there, and I really recommend checking them out if you get a chance, you won’t be disappointed.

[...] Kim, it certainly would have to be the 120% dance party that Cut Copy shows always turn into. When we saw them at Granada last time it was probably the most hyped-up crowd I’ve ever seen in Dallas and this was really no [...]
