The mashup madness of Girl Talk hit the Palladium on Tuesday night to bring the dance beats to the kids. It was quite a show, with him hitting a lot of the tracks from the most recent release “Feed The Animals” as well as some other tracks, the vast majority of which received a huge roar from the crowd.
We had seen about 15 minutes of his set from Lollapalooza, which was just insanity. This show didn’t quite have the same feeling of chaos that that one did, but he still got the party rolling in epic fashion. He commented several times on the size of the venue, and I certainly see where he is coming from, as the Palladium is basically a giant warehouse, and really not the best concert venue in the world. But though the size didn’t help the craziness, it did at least give people more room to dance, which they were of course.
Just as at Lollapalooza and every other show of his from what I’ve seen pretty much 3 minutes into the show the stage is just packed with kids dancing and going crazy. They had the same toilet paper guns from Lolla shooting roll after roll into the dancing crowd. At one point also he brought out these giant garbage bags/condoms/whatevers that his people tossed into the crowd. First it was like 4-5 ones that you thought “man that’s pretty big”, but then there were bigger ones, and then towards the end he had 2 gigantic fucking things floating around on the crowd. It was pretty wild. There wasn’t much crowd surfing, although I did see one kid either surfing or up on someone’s shoulders up on stage. Gregg himself even crowd surfed all the way to the back of the crowd on the last song, it was pretty awesome. My flash died on me or else I would have gotten a shot of it as he landed right near us.
The show was pretty awesome, pretty high energy. I think the real difficulty in a show like this is that it is so high energy the whole time it is really tough to keep the crowd going because people eventually get tired, drunk, etc., but he did an awesome job of keeping the energy level up through the whole thing, even with the size of the venue mentioned above. There were a few parts where the crowd was singing along which was cool. There were a few new mashups not on the album that I’m not sure if he had been rolling with before but we got a little “Say It Ain’t So” from Weezer in there (he did that one at Lolla) and my personal favorite was the mashup of Paul McCartney’s “I Love You” with “I Want Some Pussy”. Absolutely brilliant.
Anyway, chances are that you know about Girl Talk and have the album already, in which case you know what this is all about. The live show is a crazy scene that has to be seen and experienced I think, and it really is less of a traditional live show and more of a live collective experience where everyone just gets together and goes crazy for 2 hours. This is certainly a show where you can’t go wrong. Obviously this is pretty much the ultimate party kind of show so certainly check it out if you get a chance.
