Well in honor of the limited edition vinyl box set containing all their albums as well as the new announcement that pre-Lucky, post-High/Low albums (Proximity Effect, Let Go, Weight Is A Gift) will be re-released individually on vinyl on April 14th, I thought I would do a throwback to the original debut Karmic EP from these guys. Nada Surf is one of the rare few bands that I liked back in high school that are still out there making music. Granted, I still dig the old stuff way more, but they have got some good shit on their new albums, and they still put on a great show.

The song here that made the leap to the albums is of course “Treehouse”, which appeared on their debut album High/Low. But the version here on this EP is actually a different mix/recording of it and it sounds way more raw and live than the fairly sterile version on the album, so I easily love this version way more than the album version. The other songs on here haven’t really made an appearance on any of the albums, but you have some great rock outs, “Telescope” (also on the original 7″ I believe), “Nothing” and “Sea Knows When”, as well as a nice slow jam “Everybody Lies”. This is generally a edgier sound than the Ric Ocasek produced debut album and it really showed their promise. So check out these classic tracks and jump on those vinyl reissues if you get a chance, especially if you haven’t explored their back catalog. Their first 3 albums are pretty much total gold so I heartily recommend checking those out. I’ve noticed that the CD reissue of this EP has an extra track on it, “Pressure Free”, that I have never heard so I can’t comment on that one, my CD is the old-ass original version with just 5 tracks.

Also, to commemorate the individual vinyl reissue of those 3 albums, they will be playing a one-off show at the Bell House in Brooklyn, NY on April 15th. Tickets will go on sale this Friday (February 13th). Again they put on a good show, so hit that up.
