Update Part Deux
Well as you fine people can see the site is back in some ways, though it has time-traveled back to August, 2008. This should be a solution for the time being and then when I fix the back content hopefully we will get everything back (I have copies of everything from the main blog). Stay tuned. -BV

Update: Pitchfork & Twitter & Lolla

Posted July 20th, 2008 by BVaz · 1 Comment

Update: Pitchfork & Twitter & Lolla
Well I am in the process of moving so I can't do any proper website updates for a little while, but in the meantime, I started a twitter for the site here and I will update with stuff from Pitchfork today, and also from Lollapalooza in a couple weekends when that happens. I also have a lot of my photo blogging still going on here. Once I get stuff organized next week I should be able to get some photos from the preview night and Pitchfork up. As for yesterday at Pitchfork, I wasn't there the entire day thanks ...

Cinematic Throwback Thursday: Better Off Dead & One Crazy Summer

Cinematic Throwback Thursday: Better Off Dead & One Crazy Summer
Two brothers... One speaks no English, the other learned English from watching "The Wide World of Sports." So you tell me... Which is better, speaking no English at all, or speaking Howard Cosell? Hey, Hoops, you ever notice how people die in alphabetical order? I know, two movies.  However comparing these two movies in plot, character, and principles involved, it is the same fucking movie.  Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of both of these, however both being Savage Steve Holland projects in autuerism, his only two movies in a slew of television shows, it appears Steve made ...

Throwback Thursday: The Smiths - The Smiths

Throwback Thursday: The Smiths - The Smiths
The Smiths - The Smiths - Rough Trade - 1984 Well, somewhat inspired by this forum post, I thought I would try to cover some of the albums on the list here on the Throwback Thursday feature. First I thought I would hit up one of my favorite bands ever, and one that I feel that their influence is very poignant and prevalent in today's indie music scene. Of course I refer to the great Smiths, one of the really great and I think still underappreciated bands of the 1980s.

Wolf Parade - House of Blues Chicago - 7/8/08

Wolf Parade - House of Blues Chicago - 7/8/08
Wolf Parade is just one of those bands that is just really fucking in the zone right now, with a superb album that is my favorite of '08 so far, building buzz around said album, and a big ole tour to go out and blow some minds, and they showed their prowess once again last night at the House of Blues in downtown Chicago. They are one of those bands that I would put in the indie 'elite' as far as bands that pretty much bring solid gold with everything they do, and that certainly includes their live show. ...

Bloc Party New Single - ‘Mercury’

Posted July 7th, 2008 by BVaz · No Comments

Bloc Party New Single - 'Mercury'
First they had the countdown last night, which revealed another countdown of sorts to a BBC radio show this afternoon, and the big reveal finally is a new single 'Mercury'. It is certainly a different sound for them, with a driving drum beat, brassy horns, and a lot more voice modification on Kele's voice than usual. Anyway, go to their website to listen to the track or to see the video for the track. I don't know if this in any way indicates something about LP3, since it doesn't directly say something about that, but they have ...

Mix Tape Monday: Pitchfork Music Fest Preview

Mix Tape Monday: Pitchfork Music Fest Preview
With the greatness of the Pitchfork Music Fest coming up next weekend, I thought I would throw some fuel on the hype fire for it with some of the bands that will be blowing our minds come time for the festival. I already covered some more Dinosaur Jr. last Thursday so let's hit up some of the other acts.

People In Planes - Beat Kitchen - 7/3/08

People In Planes - Beat Kitchen - 7/3/08
Headed up to the Beat Kitchen last night for some tunage from Welsh rockers People In Planes. You may remember when I saw these guys a few months ago in the weirdest concert venue ever, the Cubby Bear, but they managed to put on a good show despite the circumstances. I have always been a huge fan of their debut album "As Far As The Eye Can See", and now they are back in the US touring on their new record "Beyond the Horizon". Last night they put on another solid performance.

Cinematic Throwback Thursday: Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man

Cinematic Throwback Thursday: Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man
There's a new drug out there called Crystal Dream. Now, what it is, you don't shoot it, you don't smoke it, you don't snort it. Apparently, you put it in your eyes, and it tells you lies. There’s a couple trends in nineties movies that resulted in some of the best films the decade had to offer, the first being drugs.  Crack in New Jack City or Nuke in Robocop 2, a bevy of amazing action flicks materialized around the subject of drugs and the changing American landscape.  Another attribute of nineties films, Japanese corporate takeovers.  This can be seen in films ...

Throwback Thursday: Dinosaur Jr. - Hand It Over

Throwback Thursday: Dinosaur Jr. - Hand It Over
Well I don't have too much planned in terms of the throwback this week because of the holiday festivities, so in honor of the great J Mascis and Dinosaur Jr. hitting Pitchfork Music Fest here in Chicago in a few weeks I thought I would throw out another homage to one of his earlier albums. This one is not one of the higher regarded albums, and is actually the last recorded Dinosaur album in the "solo J" era before the breakup/reunion in recent years, but it certainly still has its classic moments, and is still chock full of blazing ...

Ra Ra Riot with Walter Meego Tour Dates

Posted July 3rd, 2008 by BVaz · No Comments

Ra Ra Riot with Walter Meego Tour Dates
One of the great new discoveries for me earlier this year was Ra Ra Riot when I saw them opening for The Cribs at Double Door, and I was really impressed with both their stage energy and their songs. I was instantly converted into a fan, and now they have announced a slew of tour dates in support of their upcoming album "The Rhumb Line" (pictured above), out August 19th on Barsuk Records, which is one of the main albums I am looking forward to this summer/fall. I really enjoyed their show earlier this year and will certainly ...

Glastonbury 2008 Videos
Glastonbury has put up videos of full sets from a lot of the artists that played the festival over last weekend, including some of our favorites here at DBF such as The National and MGMT. The full list of artists is here and not everyone has a video setlist up, but a lot of people do, so search around.

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

Posted July 1st, 2008 by Marcus · No Comments

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
So here’s a little album I’ve been wanting to write about for some time, but didn’t know how to proceed.  It may be due, in part, to the fact that it’s been quite a spell since my last hallucinogen-induced bender.  Nonetheless, Oracular Spectacular is an encompassing album that is delightfully complex, while maintaining a lightheartedness throughout.  Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser have done a very impressive of job of creating a mash up of eclectic sounds and styles in a manner that would make a Flaming Lips/David Bowie love child shed a single tear of joy.

Mix Tape Monday: Kings of Convenience

Posted June 30th, 2008 by BVaz · No Comments

Mix Tape Monday: Kings of Convenience
This is a band I discovered kind of randomly several years ago, and they have since kind of disappeared and I'm not really sure what is going on with them, if anything anymore. They are a Norweigian band who released their last album back in 2004, and have played a few concerts recently in Norway but nothing major, and I haven't really seen any official word on a new album or anything really. The singer Erlend Øye was working in another band, The Whitest Boy Alive, whom I'm not that familiar with, but what I have heard has ...
