Throwback Thursday: The Smiths - The Smiths

Throwback Thursday: The Smiths - The Smiths
The Smiths - The Smiths - Rough Trade - 1984 Well, somewhat inspired by this forum post, I thought I would try to cover some of the albums on the list here on the Throwback Thursday feature. First I thought I would hit up one of my favorite bands ever, and one that I feel that their influence is very poignant and prevalent in today's indie music scene. Of course I refer to the great Smiths, one of the really great and I think still underappreciated bands of the 1980s.

Throwback Thursday: Dinosaur Jr. - Hand It Over

Throwback Thursday: Dinosaur Jr. - Hand It Over
Well I don't have too much planned in terms of the throwback this week because of the holiday festivities, so in honor of the great J Mascis and Dinosaur Jr. hitting Pitchfork Music Fest here in Chicago in a few weeks I thought I would throw out another homage to one of his earlier albums. This one is not one of the higher regarded albums, and is actually the last recorded Dinosaur album in the "solo J" era before the breakup/reunion in recent years, but it certainly still has its classic moments, and is still chock full of blazing ...

Cinematic Throwback Thursday: The Wraith

Cinematic Throwback Thursday: The Wraith
You listen to me, you son-of-a-bitch! There's a kid out there usin' his car to kill people, not that it's such a big deal since it seems to be your gang he's got it in for... so, if you guys try to take the law into your own hands, and that killer turns up dead, I'm gonna see you all sniffin' cyanide in the Arizona gas chamber. Some people define wraith as a ghost, however my definition extends to alternate definition b: A fucking odd movie that confused and creeped the hell out of me as a kid.  Not since The ...

Throwback Thursday: Joy Division - Control

Throwback Thursday: Joy Division - Control
Well this week's throwback concerns both the band and the movie about the band. I finally got to see Anton Corbijn's biopic about Ian Curtis this week (called "Control") and I thought what better to tackle as a throwback for the week than a throwback to this short-lived but great band. As I'm sure you know, Joy Division was a band in England back in the late 70s that was critical in the rise of the post-punk movement, creating a very unique and brooding sound that influenced a generation of musicians and fans. Of course their life ...

Cinematic Throwback Thursday – Three O’Clock High

Cinematic Throwback Thursday – Three O’Clock High
You and me, we're gonna have a fight. Today. After school. Three o'clock. In the parking lot. You try and run, I'm gonna track you down. You go to a teacher, it's only gonna get worse. You sneak home, I'm gonna be under your bed. Easily one of the most overlooked and underrated movies of the eighties, Three O’Clock High s still an amazing flick.  The film follows a defining day in the life of Jerry Mitchell, an above average student and nerd running the school bookstore and a writer for the school newspaper.

Throwback Thursday: Beastie Boys - Paul’s Boutique

Throwback Thursday: Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique - Capitol Records - 1989 Without question one of the greatest achievements in rap and hip-hop has to be this classic album from the Beastie Boys. I think it is by far their best album, and definitely reached a creative level with the back beats and sampling that few albums even come close to touching. It is still the most enjoyable Beastie album in my opinion, and is one of those albums that I can remember pretty much wearing it out playing it for months after I got it.

Throwback Thursday: Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque

Throwback Thursday: Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque
Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque - Creation Records - 1991 So old school, and while this album may not quite be top to bottom as completely solid as the past few I have put on there, it still is a great album. It is very much classic of the time period, has that definitive early-90s alterna-rock sound of basic Marshall-amplified guitar overdubs and solos over sing-songy vocals. I didn't really realize this either, but according to wikipedia this album beat out Nirvana's classic "Nevermind" to win album of the year from SPIN magazine. Even though Nirvana was never as ...

Cinematic Throwback Thursday - Real Genius

Cinematic Throwback Thursday - Real Genius
Professor Hathaway: What are you looking at? You're laborers; you should be laboring. That's what you get for not having an education. Professor Hathaway personified the typical, asshole professor most were presented in college. A man confronted with a need of tenure and a hopeless need for academic indulgence, plus the wanton of a high-powered laser, but that is beside the point. Whereas Hathaway served as the prototype for the stressed professor, Real Genius portrays the ultimate formulaic eighties plight, performed beautifully.

Throwback Thursday: New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies

Throwback Thursday: New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies
New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies - Factory Records - 1983 Well I realize with my last two throwbacks I'm picking extremely popular/well received albums, but even still, I think this is another one that the general (ie. non music nerd) populous is not that familiar with, but it is first of all my favorite New Order album, and certainly one of the best albums ever I think. Of course I refer to the uber-brilliance of "Power, Corruption & Lies".

Throwback Thursday: R.E.M. - Murmur

Posted May 29th, 2008 by BVaz · No Comments

Throwback Thursday: R.E.M. - Murmur
R.E.M. - Murmur - IRS Records - 1983 One of my all time favorites, and I would guess that even despite the huge popularity of the band maybe some people are unfamiliar with this particular album. This was of course R.E.M.'s debut album back in 1983 containing the song that really springboarded them into popularity which still remains large today, "Radio Free Europe" (it was ranked like #6 of all time alternative hits or something in Rolling Stone or some other such publication recently). While that song overshadows the others in terms of popularity, the album just drips with ...

Throwback Thursday: Cracker - The Golden Age

Posted May 22nd, 2008 by BVaz · No Comments

Throwback Thursday: Cracker - The Golden Age
Cracker - The Golden Age - Virgin - 1996 Cracker was formed by Camper Van Beethoven founder David Lowery and some other peeps, and they gained a lot of notoriety in 1992 with their song "Teen Angst". You probably know the song even if you don't recognize the title. "What the world needs now is another folk singer like I need a hole in my head". They got a lot of popularity from that song, and followed it up in 1993 with "Kerosene Hat", which is probably their most popular and most well received album, featuring the single ...

Throwback Thursday: Matthew Sweet - 100% Fun

Posted May 15th, 2008 by BVaz · 3 Comments

Throwback Thursday: Matthew Sweet - 100% Fun
Matthew Sweet - 100% Fun - Zoo Records - 1995 Matthew Sweet got a lot of attention back in the early 90s for the song "Girlfriend" and the album of the same name, which nowadays can be also found on likes of Guitar Hero II (great song). He also has some notoriety in the fact that he wrote all the psychedelic scene breaks in the Austin Powers movies, in addition to the songs with the on screen band "Ming Tea". Anyway, after the success of that album and single he released quite a few albums that never really were ...

Throwback Thursday: Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One

Posted May 8th, 2008 by BVaz · 1 Comment

Throwback Thursday: Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One - Matador Records - 1997 After looking on wikipedia and realizing this album got a 9.7 from pitchfork (although the way he starts the review with the "greatest band in the universe" line doesn't help his credibility), I don't doubt that this is the most popular and acclaimed album I have done on Throwback Thursday. But even with that being said, I bet most people are not really that familiar with it, and that is a shame because it fucking rules. This was the first Yo La ...

Throwback Thursday: Dillon Fence - Outside In

Posted May 1st, 2008 by BVaz · No Comments

Throwback Thursday: Dillon Fence - Outside In
Dillon Fence - Outside In - Mammoth Records - 1993 This week's Throwback Thursday focuses on an album that I think never really got the attention it deserved, mainly because the band never really became very popular, despite this and several other albums. Dillon Fence was one of the bands prevalent in the Chapel Hill, NC scene of the early 90s that included bands like Superchunk and Archers of Loaf. Chapel Hill back in the early 90s was just one of those places a ton of indie bands were coming out of. Anyway, this is one of those ...

Throwback Thursday: Idlewild - Hope Is Important

Posted April 24th, 2008 by BVaz · 1 Comment

Throwback Thursday: Idlewild - Hope Is Important
Idlewild - Hope Is Important - Food Records - 1998 As we continue on the journey through the classics, now we come to another great band, Idlewild. Idlewild is now up to having released 5 full albums, and this year came out with a greatest hits/b-sides release, but this album here was their very first full length release. They had released an EP called "Captain" before this came out with 6 songs on it, but this was the album that really kicked it off for them. Now the later albums certainly get more attention ("100 Broken Windows", "The ...
